Important Nutrients in the Weight Loss Process

Important Nutrients in the Weight Loss Process

You already know that sugar can add inches to your waistline, and promote several serious health conditions. The information is out there in a multitude of different forms for all to read. What we don’t see nearly as often is information telling us what types of nutrients will help increase our capacity for weight loss. Here are a handful for you to watch for:

Protein

You may have seen various celebrities going on about the virtues of high protein diets, and while much of the time their success may have more to do with avoiding sugar, protein is still an important nutrient in the weight loss process. Amino acids help to build lean muscle, and eating foods that are higher in protein will help you feel full longer and will help to keep sugar cravings at bay. Lean meats like chicken and fish, protein shakes and quinoa are good choices.

Fiber

Fiber is essential for optimum intestinal health, but it can also help you lose weight. Like with protein, high fiber foods can help you feel full longer. They also cause you to chew the food more thoroughly, helping you realize that you’re full before you’ve eaten too much. Fiber is found in fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3’s are considered essential fats because the body can’t produce them and you must get them through your diet. They are beneficial for things like memory and mood, but you may also get a weight loss benefit. Some studies suggest they can trigger a fat burning process within cells and may help your brain send signals to reduce appetite. You can get more omega 3’s by eating fish, eggs, flaxseed oil or taking supplements.

Calcium

Calcium is good for your bones and muscles, and can help lower your blood pressure. It’s important to take in enough calcium during the weight loss process, so your bones and muscles can support the exercise you’re doing. Naturally, dairy products have ample amounts of calcium, but if you abstain from dairy, you can get high amounts of calcium in almond milk, leafy greens like spinach and nuts or seeds.

These are just a few of the nutrients that will work to support your weight loss efforts, but it is important to remember that there is no magic bullet when it comes to losing weight. You must take the action each and every day, and you must remain committed throughout the process. These nutrients will help, but the real solution lies with you.
